Walking into a dispensary for the first time comes with a lot of little questions. What do I bring? Do I need to know what I want? Is it weird to say I have no idea what any of this means? Totally normal, and honestly, those are the exact questions our budtenders love answering.
Arizona Organix opened its doors in December 2012 as Arizona's first dispensary, so we have walked a lot of first-timers through their very first visit. This guide covers everything you need to know before you head in: what to bring, how check-in works, what to ask, how much you can buy, and a few tips that make the whole thing easy. If you want to peek at what is on the shelves before you go, our live cannabis menu is updated in real time.

What to Bring to an Arizona Dispensary
Arizona is a dual-license state, which means dispensaries like ours serve both adult-use (recreational) customers and medical marijuana patients. What you need depends on which one you are.
Adult-use customers: A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID showing you are 21 or older. An Arizona driver's license, an out-of-state license, a state ID card, or a passport all work.
Medical patients: Your active Arizona medical marijuana card plus your photo ID. Medical patients generally pay lower taxes and have different purchase allowances, so keep that card current.
Payment: Cash is always the easiest way to go. Ask our front desk team about other payment options available at the store.
Everyone who comes in gets their ID checked. No exceptions, no judgment. It takes a few seconds and keeps everyone on the right side of state law.
What Happens When You Walk In
Here is a simple play-by-play of a first visit to Arizona Organix, so there are zero surprises.
Check in at the front desk. Hand over your ID (and med card, if you have one). First-time guests get set up in our system, which only takes a couple of minutes.
Head to the sales floor. You can browse the menu screens and displays at your own pace, or walk right up to a budtender. Either approach is completely fine.
Talk it through with a budtender. Tell them your experience level, what kind of product sounds interesting, and anything you would rather avoid. They will narrow things down for you.
Check out. Your budtender rings you up, your products go into a sealed, child-resistant exit bag, and you are on your way.
A first visit usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. Return trips are even faster, especially if you order ahead online and use express pickup to skip the browsing and go straight to the counter.
Questions to Ask Your Budtender
If you are not sure how to start the conversation, borrow one of these. Budtenders hear them all day long.
"This is my first time. Where do most beginners start?"
"What is the difference between indica, sativa, and hybrid?"
"What is the difference between flower, pre-rolls, vapes, and edibles?"
"Which options are considered low-dose or more beginner-friendly?"
"How long do edibles usually take to kick in compared to other products?"
"Which brands do your regulars come back for?"
No question is too basic. With 50+ brands on the shelves, part of a budtender's job is helping you cut through the options. If you want a head start on the vocabulary, our guides on indica vs sativa vs hybrid and what a budtender does are good warm-ups.
A Quick Rundown of Product Types
You will see a lot of categories on the menu. Here is a cheat sheet so the names are not a mystery when you walk in.

Flower: The classic dried cannabis bud. Sold by weight, with a wide range of strains and flavor profiles.
Pre-rolls: Flower that is already rolled and ready to go, so there is no grinding or rolling required.
Vape cartridges: Cannabis oil in a cartridge that attaches to a compatible battery. Compact and discreet.
Edibles: Chocolates, mints, beverages, and more. Effects are often described as slower to arrive and longer lasting, so budtenders usually recommend starting low and going slow.
Concentrates: Wax, shatter, live resin, and similar products. These are higher potency and usually a better fit for experienced customers.
Tinctures: Liquid drops measured with a dropper, popular with people who like a consistent routine.
Topicals: Lotions and balms applied to the skin. Many people use them as part of their self-care routine.
Product labels list cannabinoid content, testing info, and other details required under Arizona rules. If you want to learn how to decode them, check out our guide on how to read cannabis labels in Arizona, then browse the full cannabis menu to see what is in stock today.
How Much Can You Buy in Arizona?
Arizona sets purchase limits by law, and your budtender's system tracks them automatically, so you do not need to do any math at the counter.
Adult-use customers (21+): Up to one ounce of marijuana per transaction, with no more than five grams of that in concentrate form.
Medical patients: Up to two and a half ounces in a 14-day period, per Arizona's medical program rules.
A few other things worth knowing: consuming cannabis in public places is not allowed in Arizona, it is illegal to drive impaired, and cannabis should never cross state lines. Keep your purchase sealed in its exit bag on the way home and store it out of reach of kids and pets.

First Dispensary Visit FAQ
Do I need a medical card to shop at an Arizona dispensary?
No. Adults 21 and older can shop with a valid government-issued photo ID. A medical card is only required if you want to purchase as a registered medical patient.
Can I use an out-of-state ID?
Yes. A valid, unexpired out-of-state driver's license, state ID, or passport works for adult-use purchases as long as it shows you are 21 or older.
Can I bring a friend who is under 21?
No. Everyone who enters the dispensary must be 21 or older, or a registered medical patient or caregiver, and must show valid ID at the front desk.
Do I need to know what I want before I go?
Not at all. Plenty of first-timers walk in with zero plan. Our budtenders will ask a few questions and suggest options. If you like to research ahead, browse our cannabis menu first.
How do I skip the line on future visits?
Order ahead from our online menu and choose express pickup. Your order will be packed and waiting so you can grab it and go.
