Despite all the bad press about marijuana slowing down cognitive ability and causing people to lose focus, there are reasons to believe certain marijuana strains actually can help boost your focus and solve cognitive problems. Since 1970, when marijuana was first classified as a schedule 1 drug, there has been little room for researchers to look into these effects until now.
Enhanced Cognitive Functioning
New studies out of Harvard Medical School have aimed to test whether or not marijuana use has a net positive or negative effect on cognitive functioning. A three-month study among people who had not used marijuana in the last decade showed once they began using marijuana their performance on cognitive tests actually improved marginally over their performance prior to using. They noted no loss in the accuracy of test responses, and faster test completion times.
Reduced Prescription Drug Use
One of the more significant findings of the studies from Harvard is the effect it has on the user’s other medications. Participants in the study were shown to drastically decrease their use of prescription pain killers, anti-depressants and mood stabilizers. This is congruent with much of the MMJ industry’s claims that marijuana, and especially sativa strains, are effective for treating depression and anxiety, as well as reducing chronic pain. In a society where we repeatedly have seen that prescription drug use is out of control, this provides a promising alternative.
In addition to Harvard’s latest studies, other studies have taken a longer-term look at the effects of marijuana. One study conducted over the course of eight years showed that users of marijuana suffered no long-term loss of cognitive ability or memory. They were able to perform equally well when accounting for education level and other outside factors.
All of this information together shows promise for the growing medical cannabis industry. As medical marijuana in Arizona becomes gains ground, it is possible we will see a turn away from the over-prescription of mainstream drugs. We, at Arizona Organix, encourage anyone who is interested in the possibilities of medical cannabis to consult with us to learn which strains may be best for enhancing their cognitive ability.
